Groundbreaking Ceremony Celebrates the Start of Construction on the YMCA Facility in Muncie
The city and YMCA of Muncie joined hands Tuesday, July 18 to commemorate the groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility that will be a vibrant addition to the McKinley-Whitely Live Learn Neighborhood project. This groundbreaking event marks the beginning of an exciting chapter in the transformation of the community, with the help of generous support from multiple donors including $1 million in READI (Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative) funding.
An integral part of the McKinley-Whitley Live Learn Neighborhood project, The YMCA of Muncie is set to revitalize the neighborhood, acting as an anchor within the region. Strategically located adjacent to Muncie Central High School, this impressive 73,000 square foot facility will serve as a cornerstone of the community, offering numerous recreational opportunities for residents of all ages.
Through the collaborative efforts of the city and the YMCA of Muncie, the READI project has made significant strides in enhancing the neighborhood. The allocation of READI funds will enable the completion of vital intersection and street enhancements, the acquisition of blighted properties, and the provision of home improvement assistance. Moreover, the funds will be utilized to develop the YMCA of Muncie, a place that will foster connection in the community.
“The YMCA is grateful for READI’s investment in this transformational community project. Together, and in concert with our strategic partners, we will improve quality of life, quality of place and create quality opportunities that will lead to improved health and educational outcomes for our community,” said Chad Zaucha, President and CEO of YMCA of Muncie.
The YMCA of Muncie project aims to achieve multiple objectives, including the creation of improved streetscape facilities and pedestrian amenities. Additionally, the development of this state-of-the-art facility will provide a focal point for recreation and leisure activities, catering to the diverse needs and interests of the community. The targeted acquisition of residential properties will contribute to the overall transformation of the neighborhood, promoting a sense of pride and belonging among residents.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by members of the community, including government officials, project stakeholders, and local residents. The event served as a testament to the collective vision and collaborative efforts that have brought this significant milestone to fruition.
“By investing in projects that enhance the quality of life and provide opportunities for all residents, we create a stronger, more vibrant region,” said Trevor Friedeberg, President & CEO of East Central Indiana Regional Partnership. "This is a shining example of how public-private partnerships can drive positive change and empower individuals to lead healthier, more fulfilling lives.”
The YMCA of Muncie represents an exciting chapter in the revitalization of the McKinley-Whitely Live Learn Neighborhood, offering boundless opportunities for recreational engagement and community development. As construction progresses, the City of Muncie and the YMCA remain committed to delivering a facility that will serve as a beacon of pride for generations to come.
Launched by Gov. Holcomb and led by the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC), READI encourages regional collaboration and data-driven, long-term planning that will attract and retain talent in Indiana. The $500 million READI fund was passed by legislation during the 2021 session and was divided among 17 regions. Through READI, 17 regions across the state that represent all 92 counties are moving forward with projects and programs designed to enhance Indiana’s regions for current and future generations of Hoosiers. Collectively, the state’s $500 million investment is expected to yield an additional $9.86 billion in public, private, and nonprofit dollars invested (19.72:1 investment leverage ratio) in enhancing Indiana’s quality of life, quality of place, and quality of opportunity.
